Hip-hop Timeline 1979-Present

Front Cover Analysis of Hip-hop magazine VIBE

Artist Case Study of Eminem

Eminem is one of the biggest selling artists of the 2000′s decade and has sold more than 86.5 million albums worldwide to date. The reason why he is so well-known is because his brand is promoted very well on lots of different media platforms.

The artist that I have decided to base my artists case study on is about Eminem. Marshall Bruce Mathers III, born in October 17, 1972, well known by his stage name Eminem (often stylized as EMINƎM) and by his alter ego Slim Shady, is an American rapper, record producer, songwriter and actor. Eminem’s rise in popularity managed to bring his group, D12, in to the mainstream recognition. He was also a member of the Detroit rap group D12, Eminem is also one half of the Detroit hip hop duo Bad Meets Evil, with Royce da 5’9″. Eminem is one of the best-selling artists in the world and is the best selling artist of the 2000s. He has been listed and ranked as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines including theRolling Stone magazine which has ranked him 82nd on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.  The same magazine has declared him The King of Hip Hop.  Including his work with D12 and Bad Meets Evil, Eminem has achieved ten number-one albums on the Billboard200. He has sold more than 42 million tracks and 41 million albums in the United States, and nearly 90 million albums worldwide.
Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP. That first album, The Marshall Mathers LP and his third major album, The Eminem Show, all won Grammy Awards, making Eminem the first artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive LPs. The Marshall Mathers LP is also considered one of Eminem’s best and most successful albums. Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005. He released his first album since 2004′s Encore, titled Relapse, on May 15, 2009. In 2010, Eminem released his seventh studio album Recovery, which was an international success. Recovery was also named the best selling album worldwide of 2010 joining The Eminem Show, which was the best seller of 2002. Eminem won Grammy Awards for both Relapse and Recovery, giving him a total of 13 Grammys in his career.
Eminem has opened other ventures since the beginning of his success. He founded his own record label, Shady Records with his manager Paul Rosenberg. He also has his own radio channel, Shade 45. Eminem began an acting career in 2002, when he starred in the hip hop drama film 8 Mile in which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, becoming the first rap artist ever to win the award.

Music Magazine Planning Sheet Type Up - Slightly different to the SHEET

Music Magazine Planning Sheet Type Up

What genre/s of music will your magazine cover?

Urban Hip-hop as I enjoy basing my music magazine around it.

Who is the target audience? How old are they? Where do they live? What are their interests?

Young people aged 16-25 in the Hip-hop culture from England.

What is the name of the magazine? Why? Connotations?

Realist - relates to the specific genre with a particular font. The font will stand out by playing with the letters

What will your masthead look like? Do you have any ideas for fonts? (this should be accompanied by sketches)

What will be the focal image for your front cover and why?

A person in the front most likely be a young adult as that is the demographic for the genre.

What photography will be required? Give details of shot type, angle and composition

The angle will be direct from waist and head. The shot will be medium to reveal certain mise-en-scene such as the clothing etc.

What mise-en-scene will be required? Location? Clothing? Make Up? Lighting? Use of colour?

There will be a plain background with a person dressed up formally also including shades held half on and half off. The lighting will be low key and high key to contrast a sense of meaning within the front cover and there will be colour involved as well.

What would be your sell lines? How will you entice your target audience?

My sell lines would not be too excessive and would provide brief information e.g. 'Outkast is now officially on the biggest selling Hip-hop of all time' where 'outcast' is spelled incorrectly.

What items and feature articles would you need on your contents page?

There will be a feature article talking about how young people are beginning to rise in the music business.

What is the focus of your double page spread? (interview? feature? Reviews? Etc)

Would consist of an interview with an artist also consisting a review of a recent album.

What photography will be required for the double page spread? Give specific details.

A close up image of the artist and a medium shot of another to vary my double page spread and also allow it to be comprehended easily by my demographic.

School magazine - Planning

Who is the target audience? (Consider age, gender and interests)

16-18 years aimed towards students mixing from female to male.

What is the name of your magazine? What are the connotations of the name?

I have not yet come up with a permanent name for my magazine yet at this point in time.

Who will be your front cover model and why?

My front cover model would contain a student obviously because the magazine is based around school.

What sort of shot will it be? Inside/outside? Low/high angle?

My magazine front cover will take place outside where both the angle and shot will be medium.

What mise-en-scene will  be required? (Location, clothing and lighting)

Outside or inside school where if taken inside, would be next to a window enabling me to take advantage of the power of contrasting where lighting would range from dark to light or vice versa. Casual clothing also present.

What would be your sell lines? How will you entice your target audience?

Will contain certain events that are going on in the school as it will allow students to have better understanding of what is happening around the school. Also tips about work and important stuff about school comforting the student when in a buzz. Achievements will be on the sell lines because it will create a sudden curiosity where students will want to read on to find out how others did compared with theirs.
